I am no tactician and never have been in football and many current footballing styles baffle the shit out of me. There is one tactic that has surfaced over the last two or three seasons that really baffles me perhaps someone on here can explain to me why the tactic is adopted so often despite catastrophic results.

Right, goalkeeper in his six yard box, defender just outside his six yard box two other defenders either side of him on the 18 yard line, so far!
Keeper despite attackers on the 18 yard line passes 4 yards to his defender. Defender then inevitably passes it left or right depending on which defender has not been closed down. That defender then passes it back to the originator of the pass or the goalkeeper or indeed the defender on the other side of the area.
In numerous cases those defenders neither have the class or guile to stop attackers closing them down, stealing the ball, and scoring with ease.

What is the reason that tactic is SO OFTEN employed in games even AFTER they have already let a goal in by doing it?

No idea, Rozza, agree with you that it is a stupid, suicidal tactic to utilise. Russian Roulette enters football..:-)

Spurs did it a few times (at least three in front of me) v us last season at their place. It was in the process of one of these incidents that it became apparent to Spurs fans around me that I wasn’t one of them! As I was in a posh seat I managed to escape unscathed.

I agree, getting back to your point, it’s total madness. It’s even dafter than Hoddle’s tactic of sticking Cort out on the wing to head a punted kick from the keeper (Postma iirc) to head to the winger who was made to play in Cort’s position. It would have been a great idea if Cort had ever managed to get the ball regularly to his target but it invariably went out for a throw in or to the opposition on the few times he was able to get his head to the damn thing.
